The third Games machine the Amiga 1200, favourites were Civilization, Gravity Power, Sensible World Of Soccer and Shadow Fighter
Civilization 1 “Sob, the times I had spending my youth on this” http://images.google.ie/images?um=1&hl=en&q=civ+1

The fourth, Is currently the 4th different Gaming PC I’ve purchased to keep up with the latest technology and the reason for moving to my favourite games machine in 1996 was Civilization 2, Baulder’s Gate, Half Life (Best pre game review purchase I’ve ever made) Baldurs Gate 2, Planescape Torment, Stalker, Mass Effect, Far Cry, Crysis, Neverwinter Nights 2, Sword of the Stars, Call of Duty 4, Bioshock, Fahrenheit, Medieval 2 :Total War , Oblivion, Unreal Tournament

Planescape is an unforgettable experience, an incredible mind-blowing story an absolute flawless gem of gaming, heartrending, you just want to play it but you know it will come to an end, it cuts both ways. You always are surprised by the results of your choices always, playing as the Nameless one new things are discovered each time you play

Yep I was one of those people too. I had an Amstrad CPC464 (with built in tape deck and psychedelic colours). Been a gamer ever since I played Elite on the BBC B micro. Just recently upgrade to a new Dell XPS 1730 laptop after 5 years with my old one. Now I'm getting stuck into Spore and Crysis. A long way from Betrayal of Krondor, Alone in the Dark and Ultima among others from my 286 days.
I spent a lot of time on Civilization 1 and I mean a lot, its a classic game and I actually prefer it to the latter Civilizations or the SimCity games. Planescape Torment is a great game orginal and full of atmosphere. Its one of thwe few fanatsy games I've completed outright. Never had the patience to finish Baldurs Gate or Neverwinter nights. Atmosphere is something which is missing in a lot of games. Try Doom 3 if you like atmosphere. Half Life 2 is ground breaking with the gravity gun and advanced use of physics. I would add my own favourites here. Diablo - the original is one of my favourites, number 2 is quite good too, number 3 to come out looks great. The RTS games I would also include are Starcraft, Warcraft (all versions), Dune (all of them). One game I keep coming back to because of the gameplay is Dungeon Keeper were your the bad guy, I love it when your the bad guy. Duke Nukem was always good for a laugh. Call of Duty landing on Omaha Beach made me feel like I was on the set of Saving Private Ryan.
However lately I've found myself playing more Flash based games or "mania" games where I think the gameplay is often a lot better without all the attached paraphenalia, higher cost, longer wait time for the modern PC game.

  3. Hi pbutler, It sounds like you've been doing this for longer than i have, much respect, i thought i was a dying breed. You've got an XPS Laptop that plays Crysis, SWEET indeed. (begrudging wimper) Thats why i need to upgrade again from my AMD FX 60 overclocked to 2.6GHz 4GB Ram and 512MB Nvidia 7900GTX to something thats not 2 and a 1/2 year old. But it plays Crysis too, no problem on mediumish+ settings. We seem to have similar tastes in genre and styles of games.I Truly loved Civ 1, Baldurs Gate 1 was harder than the rest, but i managed to beat it. Never Winter Nights 2 is better than NW1. Athmosphere Yes i agree, Doom 3 has it with its moody darkness, HL2 is Brilliant in everyway, Diablo 2 was the first game i tried online. I did try Dungeon Keeper for a while. I haven't had a chance to play Duke yet. And how many times have i played Call of Duty, Omaha Beach Level i've lost count, i'm not big on real time strategy games never played Starcraft but i like Spore. I dont know, but i always seem to go back to the original classics once in a while, but i loved the Fallout games and i cant wait for fallout 3, Total War 2 and Far Cry 2 looks promising too, hence the urgent need to upgrade, but not to vista as Planscape dosen't work on it, dammit.

Fallout 3 looks great, I have a backlog of new games to get through before a try that gem. One been Biosphere which should be arriving soon, hope it has the goods. Like you I revert back to older games all the time. I've been going through compatibility tests with all these games on the new vista and got most running to some degree so far. Will let you know if I get Planescape torment running on vista in some form with the appropriate compatibility mode. Interesting recent article on slashdot about gaming for the more mature audience http://games.slashdot.org/games/08/11/06/0554259.shtml.

  5. Fallout 3 is an absolute gem of classic, I've had some issues with my old system upgrading it to Visa Home Premium and installing an ATI 512MB 4870 GPU and a towering heatsink for my aging FX 60 cpu but it finally worked after a few day of tinkering around and back to XP Pro, it only crashes once every two days now and shes quite a beauty to play too. All this to play a game for a while on my old system. I hope to purchase a beast of a system from overclockers to take me on for the next three years with Vista 64 bit 8 gigs of ram 2 gig 4870 sli and 2TB of T1 drives all in a coolermaster 1200 case. Sweet. But alot of cash, but hey you just gotta enthuse!
Oh yeah, Biosphere is so good that I just can't play it through twice, It was perfect the first time round I played it and I'd hate to enjoy it any more the second, its love hate for me, it's brilliant to the extreme, incredibly ingrossing and an incredible movie like experience

  6. Anybody else disappointed with the cut screen ending of Fallout 3 ? It only showed one good thing that I had achieved with Agetha's Voilin? and nothing else after the standard stuff.
    Anybody?

  8. The play station used to be my favourite until the Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3 came out and i thought the Xbox 360 seemed a lot better and cheaper and had more functions and a lot more games to choose from.

  9. I used to be a junkie gamer but then I learned programming and now I just see repetition, XYZ co-ordinates and collision detection. A bit like your man in the Matrix with all the code trickling down.
Now that a large part of my living is made in front of the computer there is barely a second I can squander with games. When I do finally play a game, say on an Xbox at a friends house my attention lasts about 5 mins and then I'm bored with it and am much happier to tinker with a rubiks cube instead.

Anyway that's no help at all to the topic but the real reason I'm writing is to clue Philip into www.elara.ie for computer parts. I use them all the time. You can collect your goodies from Park West when they come in which saves a tonne on postage. To build your system start with a good case that'll cost about 120 euro. Then you can piece it together bit by bit. You shouldn't really need 8 gigs of ram. I was considering it but I started out with 4gb to see how it runs and it's already fine. I work with realy huge files sometimes in graphics and video. Just make sure you buy fast RAM with good timings. Also check your motherboards compatibility list before you buy because some can be fussy and give you headaches.

  10. Yes your right about the 4Gigs of ram but only with a 32bit operating system (OS) as this is the limit of its addressable memory functionality and any more would be wasted hence the move to vista 64bit, Vista being rumoured to be the only OS capable of upgrading to Windows 7 and by God you will need more ram as per usual.

The last time is purchased off elara must have been in 2002 and a graphics card Nvidea 6600GT it was I believe. Thanks Topfoto I now use custom PC configuration forms to build PC's with branded components and import them from Holland or England depending on the currency rates and then fix their screw ups myself.

  11. btw I'm running Vista64. I have run it on 2Gb and it's very smooth. As I said I work a lot with photoshop so I'd notice a slow down if it was there. When I reintroduce the extra 2gb to make 4gb the improvement in performance is there but it's negligable. Running on 64bit might have a something to do with better pagefile handling? Who knows but it's a good machine overall.

  12. Yes you right there, in theory with enough ram you may disable virtual memory altogether for a very fast file accessing experience, but i've noticed the even with large amounts of ram that the swap file always takes up 1.5 times the space anyway regardless? But with 64bit it means happy days with resource management, maybe the pagefiles could be improved on, I think so too.

  15. Call of Duty I can dig, but gears of war is just crap. I just couldn't get into the first or second game. Its get to much credit and is over advertised. The best game for the Xbox 360 has to be Oblivion.

the games to buy r cod 5 nd lord of the rings conquest

    Posted 1 year ago #
  28. So, does this mean you've played Far cry 2 and Fallout 3? I've bought Cod 5 and ran through it in two sessions, not much of a game there just like COD 2 with 50% of everything added and nothing new at all, disappointing. Cod 4 is far superiour. LOTR Conquest, is just like all of the other RTS's; a race for resources, upgrades and then a 'tank rush' with only the heroes of any interest. You haven't played Fallout 1 or 2 as they we released in the mid to late 90's or seen Far Cry by the looks of things so I guess you'll have to suck it up some more.
